Wrong position for a Wind Turbine

Correct position for a Wind Turbine

A typical size wind turbine for a domestic property will be between 3 and 10KKW
Wind turbines should ideally be sited in an open area with no obstructions like trees or buildings to obstruct wind flow.

Historical wind speeds for your location will need to be checked. There is usually more wind in winter than in summer. In general wind speeds increase as they go up hills and decrease a s they go down, so a good location is at or near the top of a hill, preferable south west facing.

The distance of the wind turbine from a building should be 20 times the height of the building, this is particularly important if the building is located West/South West of the wind turbine.

Building Height 5m - Distance from Building (5x20) 100m

If there are a number of buildings within 200M of the wind turbine, ideally a higher tower should be used, the higher a tower the more efficient the wind turbine will be. As a rough guide a 3M increase in height will give 15% more electricity.

You will need to take account of local planning considerations for installing your wind turbine.

Wind turbines do create a small amount of noise, so they should not be situated too close to a neighboring  property.

Consider sharing a wind turbine installation with a neighbour.

Excess energy from the wind turbine can be sold to the grid, but to do this you will need to install special meters.
